Composition of Gastrointestinal Gas in Man

Abstract
Present study was attempted to analyse composition of gastrointestinal gas in man. In 9 patients who were diagnosed as stomach cancer, intestinal obstruction or peptic ulcer and were received laparatomy, gases were sampled from small intestine (mostly from jejunum), large intestine and / or stomach. composition of those gastrointestinal gas to 02 and CO2 was analysed by means of . Scholander micro gas analyzer and results obtained were summarized as follows:
Mean composition in per cent and it¢¥s standard error were 02:14.9 &1.98, CO2 : 4.69 & 1.47 in stomach, 02 : 2.23 & 0.49, CO2 : 8.88 & 0.08 in small intestine and 02 : 1.87 & 0.56, CO2 : 10.43 & 1.44 in large intestine.

Despite of that dietary conditions of patients could not be controlled in even condition composition of gas in each organ showed comparatively small individual variations..

Results obtained in this study were discussed and compared with studies on gastrointestinal gases reported by other workers.
